BOUNDLESS

REVIVING SYDNEY'S SUBCULTURES
Located on the corner of Oxford Street and Flinders Street in Taylor Square, 1-5 Flinders Street was the heart of Surry Hills, home to a large community of LGBTIQA+ and other marginalised subcultures. However, due to lock out laws, many of the venues that promoted the alternative nightlife were forced to close.

The overall design concept was to create a space of escapism and fun within the limits of suspense and immortality that would revive the lost culture that existed in Surry Hills. Tension must naturally exist between each subculture present.

The ultimate aim was to create a space which celebrated these differences, spread across 4 levels of Flinders Street;
  • Visible Escapism - Escaping through performance and letting go of social norms.
  • Hidden Escapism - Escaping through activities which question legal conformity
  • In-between Escapism - Escaping through anonymity, allowing for unexpected interactions and tensions to occur; an "in-betweenness" of both inclusivity and exclusivity
